LESSON 1 - WHAT IS SINGLE CAMERA PRODUCTION?

TASK 1

Task 1: Understanding 'single camera production'
A) Define 'single camera production':

Single camera productions are not live footage and require many editing and takes. Filming using "single camera production" only requires using one camera, and using the same camera to take different angles and shots that are needed. The editing process is time consuming as you have to edit it over and over again as it only use a single camera. Financially is an advantage. More creative and liberating. More creative beautiful shots. Take time to set up the perfect shot. More specific. Take as much time as needed. Social media is a huge platform where single camera is used (shiros story)- youtube. cinema, television, online, mobile device, film festivals. Types of single camera production- single drama, adverts, crime, documentary, narrative based music videos. Techniques- shots types, angles, lighting,

B) Identify the advantages and disadvantages of single camera production (refer to examples where you can):

      Advantages:                               Disadvantages:
  • A single camera can be cheaper                                         Takes longer to set up and film
  • More aesthetic control                                                        Use more equipment and camera men
  • Better lighting and sound control                                      Less realistic reactions
  • Enhances the detail and excitement                                  Not as natural
  • Does not take up as much space                                        Longer to edit and more takes
  • One crew member(smaller crew)                                      Only one angle at a time (move and re-light)

C) How does multi-camera differ to single camera productions.

A Multi-camera production requires more than one camera whereas a single camera production only requires one camera. the multi camera production usually shoots films and programs where it could use several cameras when filming the different intakes on the set. The footage is edited live whilst filming on set which is much quicker to edit. The lighting is above the studio floor where they are controlled remotely. This is an advantage as it is much quicker to control the lighting.
  • Every camera needs a camera man/women to run functionally.
  • Multi camera needs more crew to function all several cameras which is a financial cost on the director.
  • Less time consuming.
  • Allows to get different camera angles/shots in just one take (quicker).
  • Keeps continuity throughout.
D) List 3 examples of single camera shows/films (aim for different genres)
