A podcast is a digital audio file which is available to download from the internet, computer or any digital device. It is most commonly for podcasts to be a series which people would subscribe to. Some of the most popular podcast series includes: Serial, This American Life, S-Town, Reply All and Criminal. Podcasts can also be episodes where listeners can listen when travelling or on the road for free.
The word 'Podcast' was originally formed by the two words "iPod" and "broadcast" which was first suggested by The Guardian columnist and BBC journalist Ben Hammersley. The first Podcast to be was developed (Podfather) in 2004 by former MTV video jockey Adam Curry and software developer Dave Winer in the early 21st century from the iPod and broadcast. Podcasting previously know as "audio-blogging" rooted originally from the 1980s. There are currently more than 115,000 English Language podcasts available for streaming online or any digital advice today.
One of the best thing about Podcasts is they are easily accessible for workers as you can listen to them on all digital devices and people on the go as you can virtually listen to them anywhere and at anytime. There are many different platforms to listen to podcasts for free some including: YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, Overcast (iOS free), Castro (IOS Free) and Deezer. However, there are also podcasts you will have to purchase for example: Pocket casts (£2.49-£2.99). You can also subscribe for free which means the app will automatically download the latest episodes yo your library.

There are many different podcast platforms some including: Buzzsprout- Growing through simplicity, Podbean- the user friendly newbie, Blubrry- tasty podcasting features and Soundcloud- the most familiar. These different platforms mainly depend on the audience.  

Podcasts audiences ranges depending on the genre of the podcast. There are many genres to a podcast such as: gaming, film, news, educational and the most popular comedy (shock jocks). Gender and personal interests determine the target audience for listeners of podcasts. A survey conducted in January 2019 by Civic Science found that 7% of US internet users ages 13 and older claimed to be daily podcast listeners, and 8% listened weekly. While these numbers are still fairly low, additional third-party surveys have found that frequent listeners are highly engaged. There are also many different types of podcasts including: the interview, panel show, routine, motivational, solo, conversational, fiction storytelling, hybrid, repurposed content and many more.

Podcasts exist as it can help listeners gain an insight to what the makers message is and what they want people to get from listening. Also, podcasts are to educate people and to deliver a content of creativity responsive purposes. The uses of podcasts varies depending on the speaker, the source through which the podcast is shared, and the intended audience.
